A Canvas of Lies : Flash Fiction Short Story

A Canvas of Lies I would like to believe that I am a good judge of character and not easily deceived, but this was really  different, since my two close friends ended up stabbing me in the back.  Museums, paintings and culture were said to be things of the rich, the uber wealthy. It was…

The law of efficiency

Time is funny. When working on a long boring assignment , it can seem to move very slowly. But when watching your favourite web series….BAM ! There goes 3 hours of your day.

But why does time work like that ? Let me introduce to you Parkinson’s law of time management. It simply states that :

This is why a 20 minute task of writing an email can sometimes take a week.

When you give yourself some time to complete a task, it will take that much time. If you give yourself a week to do your assignment – it will take a week. But if you give yourself a deadline of 9 pm later that night , you will put in effort to complete it.

Compare giving yourself a month to finish working on your new business logo vs a Sunday afternoon to sit down and get the same work done. Your work will expand to the time that it is given. When we have a long term project due after a month, we usually don’t begin until the week of the deadline. Since we only feel the pressure of the task when we have less time to work on it.

Northcote Parkinson gave an example in the essay he wrote for the Economist explaining this phenomenon.

As the story goes – a woman has a single task to send a postcard by the end of the day. She spends an hour finding the card, another half hour looking for her glasses, an hour and a half for writing the card and then another 20 minutes deciding on whether to take her umbrella or not.
A busy person on the other hand would take less than 15 minutes to get this done. So in the example of the woman , she had a day’s worth of time to get her work done, so she took a day. The busy person , on the other hand only had 15 minutes, so took only 15 minutes to get the task done.

This is the basic principle to getting more done in less time. By setting yourself smarter and more efficient deadlines, you can get all your work done in less time than it would have taken. Set yourself a realistic deadline taking into consideration all aspects of your work. Sometimes you might even catch yourself in a surprise like I did – when it only took me an hour and a half to complete a worksheet which I was sure would take me at least 2 days.

By using this law you can get more work done in less time and create some free time for yourself.

A grocery run at 4 am

The “Sunday Market” as the locals at Hyderabad of the Hemanagar district call it, is something unique to the culture of the place. Overnight, the deserted blazing hot street turns into a bustling crowded market.   Over Saturday evening, stall vendors would lug their goods from all over the district and set up their wares…

A late night ice-cream craving

Walking through the streets of Thakur village at Kandivali, you can find over a dozen options of food stalls to pick from. But one that I love going to is a small ice-cream shop at the street corner.  This place allows you to have your bowl of ice-cream with a show. The owner of the…

Does photographing a moment take the experience away

When the shutter clicks and the machinery whirs – your camera has essentially captured the scene around you into a small frame. From weddings to a cousin’s reunion. From an evening out to beach trip.

Capturing the food, people and the scenery around us has become a way of life for some of us.

And I’m one of them. Anytime I walk into a buzzing street market with tinkling windchimes and colorful dresses on display – my camera is out even before I realize.

Now as a photographer– comes the dilemma–

Does photographing the moment steal the experience away?

Do we get so caught up in taking photographs that we often forget to simply pause and soak it in? I often do. Sometimes we lose sight of the reason we’re out there with our friends /family or on the beach – to have fun and enjoy it !

And in the process of trying to capture the moment – I lose sight of my goal of photography – to have fun!

So,  what’s the final take on this ?There are no right or wrong answers but let me demonstrate my perspective.

Let’s take this picture of the sky outside my balcony here in Mumbai. It’s a gorgeous purple spread across with blotches of a pinkish orange in between. You can also see the city light far off in the distance.

So now I take a picture. Or two. Or a few more.

But when I’m done, I promise myself to put the camera away and enjoy the view.

So, take all the pictures you want and then put the camera away.

And I truly love Erin Sullivan’s take on this !

But I’d like to go a bit further.

It was 7 pm .I was sitting outside with my grandmother and I saw this gorgeous sky outside my window in Mumbai.

What’s the story behind this picture? What time of the day was it ? Was I with someone? Where did I see this?

By having a story behind it – even if it’s only 2 sentences long makes all the difference .It helps you document your moment with more clarity and meaning.
